Have You Tried Them? #BOMBChallenge

Hey Subbies,

I hope everyone doing much better today than what has been happening to our nation as a whole. I really tired of the rhetoric being used today in our government and many have lost their lives in vain because of this blatant ignorance and the sense cognitive dissonance that I'm truly tired of hearing as a Black educated working-class woman that I keep hearing the opposite from people who want tear people of color into nothingness. This is why today and for a long time now I'm people are finally seeing our worth with many black-owned businesses that have been thriving these past few years. So today's post I will be talking Black-owned business that creates amazing products that you've probably already seen at your local drugstore or Beauty Supply. This list based on what seen on YT videos from Makeup Gurus before I even knew they were Black-Owned in some cases. Also, tell me what is your favorite BOMB Brands. So with further ado, first up is...

Update: I'm editing this post because I found that companies have become really miss leading about who owns or operates some of these brands. Many articles promoting supposed "black-owned" brands should retract or edit their articles. Here is the article if you want more in-depth information and please share it. Shoutout to @Timalovelemons for pointing this out.

Is it Dancehall or House Music?

Hey Subbies,

I've been debating to either create a blog solely on basis of K-pop or POPular music genre that has been my fancy instead of overflowing my feed with k-pop. Let me know if this is a good idea. I know haven't put much content on my own out lately due to the shock of not have worry about going to class has me shook. On top of that, I've been trying figure my next steps in life or life after college. Right now, I have my part-time job and my design internship, so most of my creativity has gone towards that, so at end of the day I'm exhausted with people keep asking me what is going to do next. Like Chill! everything happens in own time...I wanted to travel to possible Jamaica to finally see it since k-pop keeps giving me island vibes.

I realized and the reason for this post is because I have for quite a while know that music industry is classist for example, your American folk music has been mostly subjugated to White/Caucasian (apparently Caucasian is negative term for white people these days but most White-Europeans ancestry is from these mountain regions of Russian called the Caucuses) and for African-Americans it's Blues later Rhythm & Blues or today R&B to be more inclusive. Both genres talk about struggles of poor working Americans during the beginning of the 20th century from dealing with socioeconomic issues of classism, racism, and etc. As a kid, I'm always reminded of the struggles seen through biopics of movies about famous musical groups/artists that broke up from this period to the mid-century due to washing of their content or artist to fit the target audience a.k.a marketing. Well, music is supposed to bring people together right.

This brings me to K-Pop today that is heavily marketing EDM music. On my YouTube channel, I try to document the popularity of music coming from America to South Korea with a playlist that beginning K- and end with a genre like Rock, Trap, EDM, Deep House and even Reggae that I did a post on here; these genres should not be confused with this term called Tropical House because EDM has very messy past of mislabeling. Anyway, EDM's Trap music that I've talked about in a past post become very popular in K-hip-hop and especially in its Pop side with girl and boy groups for their dance breaks or Rapper's break or throughout the song with overuse of 808s and hi-hats over an EDM beat. House and EDM follow a similar formula called a 4onthefloor or use Triads in many cases that can found in jazz, hip-hop, and traditional popular Jamaican music to get people to get up and dance.

I came upon this channel called Nerdwriter1, who I think is a Vox producer. (I have to say is their editing is what I aspire to be if I ever take my motion graphics skills seriously.) Vox is kind of a media group made of different content creators that focus on news and politics (some may deem them too liberal) to things you never knew about like the science behind eclipses. Anyways, right after watching the video on Work, I searched for it up on Vox's channel for Tropical House since had watched it about a year ago but the video was gone. However, I had mistaken the term for another.

The basic premise of the video on the Rihanna song Work [Rihanna's 'Work' Is Not Tropical House] ft. wannabe Caribbean Drake lol. He stood it up against Justin Beiber's Purpose album that is considering this new jokingly term thanks to DJ Kygo called "Tropical House" music that he himself is so over it, and Rolling Stones went ahead and used it to describe the Rihanna's Work is of a metaphorical "Tropical Flavor" variety.

However, the dance style in Bieber's Sorry M/V and Work (explicit) is what the Caribbean likes to call it "Waste-line Music" that is used has Afro-Caribbean influences of Riding the Riddim like the Wine, Footworking, Acrobatics, Twerking, and Grinding. But thanks to Rihanna's use of "Caribbean English" (Patios) it was subjugated to Dancehall and the use of a popular Dancehall track that has been recycled in most imported Dancehall tracks in the 90s to the 2000s.

The video is a great retrospective on the term/genre because Tropical House has its roots in the popular genre Dancehall.

He mentioned artists like Skrillex and Diplo's Major Lazer. However, on Wikipedia Tropical House has its own page now and it states "Tropical House" has influence from Deep House with no mention of Dancehall or Dub or Ska or Dem Bow influences except for this sentence:

"It usually includes tropical instruments such as steel drums (Trinidad Tobago), marimba (African), guitar, saxophone or even pan flute, like Dancehall."
I'm guessing the dances are "like Dancehall" too.

Now, let's look at House Music / 1 / and it's sub-genre Deep House / 1 /that have that influential signature 80s sound.
"Early house music was generally characterized by repetitive 4/4 beats, rhythms mainly provided by drum machines, off-beat hi-hat cymbals, and synthesized basslines. While house displayed several characteristics similar to disco music, it was more electronic and minimalistic, and the repetitive rhythm of house was more important than the song itself.
Deep house is known for tempos typically from 100bpm-120bpm, spacious use of percussion elements, muted basslines, soft keyboard sounds (pads), use of advanced chord structures, ambient mixes, and soulful vocals (if any). Lyrics usually focus on positive/uplifting or forlorn modern blues lyrics."
I rather people say they hear the EDM and Caribbean or Dancehall influences or call it EDH (Electric Dancehall) than the infamously coined term Tropical House. And just like Kygo, I'm over the term Tropical House that is just a digital update for something that already exists and that is Dancehall. Hopefully, Rihanna or anyone willing can put Dancehall back into American mouths and hearts again.

Laptops for your Major

Hey Subbies,

As you all probably know I just finished school in May, and I'm really happy to finally finish one of my goals in life, and that was going to a 4-year University and being the second person to go to college in my family. But as the saying goes for an Art-design student like myself we are pretty much broke but I'm blessed to have people around to help me out like building my desktop pc and helping me with transportation to go to college. However, I couldn't afford Apple and have yet bought one even though I'm bilingual with both Apple and Microsoft OS because it has always been PC at home/work and Apple at school, In addition, I'm picky, so building a computer would be nice (if they could just let us pick the processor, RAM and hard drive than were golden cough cough... i5/i7, 500-512GB, 8GB of ram). I really hate that can't build my own custom laptop now that they have the new Surface, Macbooks, and etc. coming out now.

Recently, my co-worker is going for her master's in Psychology and we're both Alumnus of CSU. She's actually looking for a laptop for her internship this fall. She's thinking about getting a Mac computer simply to do documentation on and she says, "They seem more reliable than PC, they are $200 more than other PCs, and most of her classmates use Apple laptops." Her sisters are Art majors, so they have Macs of course and her boyfriend also owns an iMac. I'm a bit confused when she said they're $200 more than other PCs, which are possibly the top-of-the-line laptops i7, 500gb-1T HDD, and +8gbs of RAM between $600-$900 models. I told her to try gazalle.com if you want to buy a Mac for the first time because for a brand new Mac you'll pay $1200&up + Apple Care ($99-$299)+ software($40-$100). At school alone, Macs are targeted no matter if you're in an affluent area or not and I've heard a lot of stories of Apple products being comprised over the years.

But I've noticed since high school all my Art buddies started out with iPods/ iMacs (because we grew up with them) than the iPhone before jumping on the  Macbook train. I'm not only weary of buying something over $1000 that isn't a car or home or any other investments these days. But the most reliable computers I have owned have been my Lenovo and Asus desktop, so far with my Lenovo Ideapad lasting me 7 years even after my monitor hinge broke it still keep going till now.

Today, I want to recommend some top-rated brands for this year and I hope computer brands come up with better-tiered systems that is relative to ram and hard drive space:

Processor | HDD/SDD | RAM
i3             | 128-256gb      | 4gb (Everyday User)
i5             | 256-500gb      | 6-8gb (Standard/ Designers/Communications)
i7             | 512-1TB     | +8gb (Computer Science/ Gamers/ Content Creators)

*500GB is a good baseline for PCs and I  found it hard to max it out on my Lenovo i5 machine.
If you use PCs just for work/business a 13-inch computer is just fine. But for multi-taskers like myself try 14-17 (15 inches is recommended).

Okay, so what's best for you:

For the everyday person, Asus Zenbook UX330 is a good chose but if you want to dip your toes into Apple then try Macbook Air or an iPad for simple banking, documentation, emailing.

Designers/ Content Creators:

It will always be an Apple Macbook pro for us designers. But if you can't afford that then what I was always told to do is to look at what Gamers or Computer Science majors were using because usually, their computers were so robust like Alienware or Asus or Msi just right for what I needed. When I was still in school I saw my friends use Alienware, Microsoft Surface, HP, Acer, Lenovo, and Asus to do all our design work, so don't feel obligated to run out and buy a $2000 computer unless you have the means to do so. Also, for you videographers, there is a line of PC called Razer with their Blade line that is a powerhouse with great sound quality for whatever you are working on in the studio or on the go.

Computer Science/ Business

Lenovo Thinkpad hands down are my personal recommendation and if that's a little out of your budget try the Ideapad line.

Science/ Engineer

Well, I can't say that I'm surprised but Dell's reboot of their XP line and with their new Precision is a top pick this year and it seems to be a good fit for Computer Engineers these days.

Law/ Medicine

Microsoft Surface line is a great fit for portability and functionality. I would recommend it to design students as well.

Now That is What I Call K- Rock

Hey Subbies,

I know I write a lot about Korean Music but I've been inspired to do so recently since a lot political news and uprising having been happening recently but in my case every freak'n day here in America and we all know why. Plus, I wanted take break from my regular schedule programing to do something else that doesn't include coding for my senior project. However, I can't wait for the age Aquarius to get here already, 2012 began awaking process, 2017 is possible the second wave, 2023 is apparently when finally get there, and a lot people will pass on because of these really strong transits and retrogrades. When I talk to people about these thing they like "Nah" but according to astronomy and geography we are an Open system/planet that can be affected by outside forces ie planets, moon, stars, and even hunks of rock. Mercury is retrograde, Venus just went direct but wait more planets will be going retrograde so get ready for more civil unrest. Thus I want to talk about the growing rock scene that is steadily becoming mainstream since the impeachment of Park Kun Hae controversy/scandal. Korean Rock just stepped up their game but there a lot band that have been rock'n it out and the bands feature females and males rock'n'rolling but of course they're either are on hiatus or disbanded in the last 10 years.

I have to pay homage to the late great Chuck Berry, the godfather of Rock'n'Roll who is actually the one we should be one should thanking for pioneering the art form and sound that is Rock as we know it. I want to also mention here the one who pave its way into the mainstream Seo Taiji, who inspired a lot of K-pop artists like IU and  BoA the dancing queen of Kpop and she's a part of the first modern Hallyu wave btw for all you newcomers, she's also the host of Produce 101 this season. (Check Bursters' cover of BoA-NO.1) In addition, let's not forget the other pioneer of K-rock is Shin Jung-hyeon who catalog spans since late 1960s into the 2000s. Also, here I want to highlight the Big 3 according to wikipedia, Boohwal, Baekdoosan, and Sinawe. It's really hard to find videos that pre-date YouTube but should be able to find some of these guys on YT. (Shout out to Crying Nut and No Brain as well). If you're not into mainstream K-pop, then you're in luck hopefully this will open your hearts with some K-rock music.
